Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE)

At our school we follow the Cambridgeshire Primary Personal and Social Education (PSE) Scheme, which is used widely across the county and meets all national requirements.

PSE supports children to develop the skills, understanding and confidence they need to stay safe, healthy and happy, and to grow into responsible members of the community. All learning is carefully planned to be age-appropriate and taught in a calm, supportive environment.

What children learn in Key Stage 1 (Years 1–2)

In KS1, learning focuses on:

  • Understanding feelings and emotions

  • Developing positive friendships and kindness towards others

  • Knowing how to stay safe, including basic online safety

  • Understanding how to look after their bodies, including hygiene and healthy choices

  • Learning about different families and what makes a good friend

Teaching at this stage is simple, practical and discussion-based, using stories and activities children can relate to.

What children learn in Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6)

In KS2, children build on earlier learning and explore:

  • Managing emotions and developing resilience

  • Respectful relationships and friendships

  • Keeping safe in more independent situations, including online safety

  • Understanding physical and emotional changes as they grow

  • Money, responsibilities and being part of a wider community

All content is introduced gradually and in a sensitive, age-appropriate way.

Statutory and non-statutory elements

In line with government guidance:

  • Relationships Education and Health Education are statutory in primary schools.

  • Sex Education is not statutory at primary level.

As part of Relationships Education, children learn about families, friendships, respect and personal safety. Any learning about the human body is factual, age-appropriate and focused on wellbeing and safety.
