History
Our history curriculum at Willingham Primary School has been designed to ensure that all pupils can develop an in-depth knowledge of specific periods in history as well as historically significant events and people. We aim to develop a strong sense of chronology through delivering a curriculum that is knowledge rich and builds upon their previous learning. Certain themes, such as empire, authority and exploration, appear throughout our curriculum, which allows children to develop a strong understanding of these concepts. As well as building on the children’s historical understanding, we want our children to think like historians. Our history units focus on historical concepts such as: continuity and change, causation, similarity and difference and significance. We do this throughout our teaching, as well as using enquiry questions in our lessons that the children can then discuss and write about. Questions such as “Why did Boudicca rebel against the Romans?” or “How did the Vikings shape Britain?” Throughout the curriculum, the children are frequently exposed to the experiences of real life historians and archaeologists and learn how we can interpret sources to find evidence, which tells us more about the past.
