Year 5 and 6: Kandinsky

In Years 5 and 6, we have been learning about the history of abstract art and looking, in particular, at the work of Wassily Kandinsky. The children identified the characteristic features of Kandinky's work and used their sketchbooks to record what they had learned and to experiment with aspects of his style.

We also talked about synesthesia and the links between musical sounds and lines and colour in art. We listened to Stravinski's Rite of Spring  and even found out a little about the Russian alphabet.

In the second lesson of this series, we used the work in the sketchbooks as a starting point for an independent piece of art using some of Kandinsky's stylistic features:

Here are some of the Year 6s working in their sketchbooks:

The children became really enthusiastic about Kandinsky and enjoyed thinking about line, colour and balance without the constraints of representation. I am very excited to see their finished pieces of work.
