Year 5/6: Wassily Kandinsky, part 1

The Year 5/6s have been looking at the abstract art of the 1920s and have taken as their focus painting Composition VIII by Wassily Kandinsky.

We learned about the associations between line, colour and musical sounds in Kandinsky’s art and did some markmaking in response to Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring (1913). We then went on to work in sketchbooks making notes about the features of Kandinsky’s work and planning an abstract piece in his style. Pupils took one of four paintings and were encouraged to consider elements of art such as scale, repetition and balance:

The children thought carefully about the composition of their design:

I was really impressed by their creativity and precise drawing skills. Some pupils chose to continue with their design over lunchtime:

In the following lesson, we discussed synesthesia and read extracts from Über das Geistige in der Kunst concerning the associations that Kandinsky made with specific colours. The children used their sketch to experiment with adding colour to their design:

Next week, we will start on our finished projects. I can't wait to see how these turn out.
