Year 1: Leaf watercolours
In their topic work, the Year 1s have been learning about weather and the seasons. In art, we learned how to use watercolours to create beautiful colour mixes in a leaf painting.
We began by carefully observing leaves gathered from around the school grounds. We looked at the colour, texture and the lines traced by the veins.
The children then drew a leaf using oil pastel and attempted to reproduce the colours using very wet brushes. I encouraged them to start with an initial wash and then drop in other colours until they were happy with the effect:
The oil pastel outline contained the wet paint and the children were able to see the colours mixing and making beautiful shapes before their eyes.
Here are some of the finished pieces:
Although these are small, I do think that they are extraordinarily beautiful. Well done, Year 1!
