Writing

At Willingham Primary School, we want every child to become a confident, creative and skilled writer. We follow the National Curriculum for English, ensuring children develop strong writing skills that will support them throughout their education and beyond.

We teach writing through a clear and supportive process. Children are given regular opportunities to:

· Explore high-quality texts to inspire their ideas

· Learn key writing skills such as grammar, punctuation and vocabulary

· Plan, write and edit their work

· Write for different purposes, including stories, reports, letters and more

We believe that children learn best when they understand the purpose of their writing, so lessons are linked to engaging books and topics.

Our teaching focuses on helping children to:

· Write clearly and confidently for a range of audiences

· Use accurate punctuation and grammar

· Develop a wide and interesting vocabulary

· Organise their ideas into well-structured pieces of writing

Children are encouraged to talk about their ideas before writing and to improve their work through editing and feedback.

We recognise that every child is different. Teachers carefully support pupils by:

· Providing model examples of writing

· Breaking tasks into clear, manageable steps

· Offering extra support or challenge where needed

Above all, we aim to inspire a love of writing. We celebrate children’s work, give them opportunities to share their writing, and encourage them to take pride in what they produce.
