Science
Science is a subject which allows and encourages the indomitable question of 'Why?'. At Willingham Primary School, we adopt the fully national curriculum-aligned scheme 'Oxford Owl' to enable our pupils to learn and experience science in an engaging and relevant way.
Pupils learn substantive knowledge alongside disciplinary knowledge in a well-sequenced curriculum. Each lesson contains key vocabulary, teaching points and often a teacher or pupil-led model or investigation into the scientific principle. The national curriculum lists ways of working scientifically which are built into every Oxford Owl unit, in an appropriate form for the age group. Additionally, each unit contains an 'investigation' - a larger scale lesson of working scientifically which seeks to answer a key question and prove its results.
In primary school, is it particular important that pupils are able to combine theoretical knowledge with practical experience; especially in KS1, pupils are best able to learn when the knowledge is linked to something concrete that they have experienced. We therefore prioritise opportunities to learn practically, leading to a justified weighting in the curriculum towards biology and chemistry over physics. Visit from external providers, such as a mobile planetarium, further provide pupils with opportunities for learning beyond the classroom.
