Music

We aim to inspire a love of music in all pupils and provide them with the knowledge and skills to perform, compose and appreciate music with confidence. Through our Music curriculum, pupils develop their creativity, self-expression and understanding of a wide range of musical styles and traditions.

At WPS, we follow the Kapow Primary Music scheme of work, which is fully aligned with the National Curriculum. The scheme ensures clear progression in both knowledge and skills across all year groups. The curriculum is built around the following key areas:

Performing: developing confidence in singing and playing tuned and untuned instruments with accuracy, control and expression.

Listening: exploring and responding to a wide range of music from different genres, cultures and historical periods.

Composing: creating music through improvisation and structured compositions using voices, instruments and digital tools.

The history of music: learning about how music has developed over time and exploring significant styles, genres and traditions.

Inter-related dimensions of music: understanding and applying the key elements of music, including pitch, duration, dynamics, tempo, texture, structure and timbre.

Pupils in EYFS are introduced to music through singing, movement, rhythm activities and exploration of sounds using a range of instruments. From Years 1 to 6, pupils take part in regular music lessons where they build on prior learning and develop their skills across all areas of the curriculum.

Music is further enriched through weekly singing assemblies, where pupils learn and practise songs linked to different events, celebrations and seasons. These sessions help to develop vocal confidence, pitch awareness and a shared sense of enjoyment in music across the school.

We are proud to have a fantastic school choir who take part in events such as Young Voices at The O2, providing pupils with the experience of performing as part of a large-scale ensemble. Pupils also benefit from live music experiences through visiting musicians and performers who enrich the curriculum.
